Nature Writing RETREATS IN Cornwall
What happens when we slow down enough to
truly notice the world around us?
where ideas take root, connections deepen and new growth begins.
In the wood, the understory is the rich layer of life that grows beneath the canopy
At Understories, we create retreats that offer space to slow down, pay attention and reconnect: with books, with writing, with nature and with yourself.
Set in beautiful natural landscapes, our retreats bring together those looking for an immersive experience centred on creativity, conversation and contemplation. Whether you join us for a reading retreat or a nature writing workshop, you'll find a welcoming community, inspiring surroundings and the freedom to step away from the demands of everyday life.
Our retreats are rooted in the belief that stories matter. The stories we read help us understand the world; the stories we write help us understand ourselves. Both are enriched when we make time to pause, observe and engage more deeply with the places around us.
Based at Cabilla in Cornwall—the home of Our Oaken Bones and a remarkable temperate rainforest restoration project—many of our retreats draw inspiration from the natural world and the restorative power of being immersed in it.
Join us beneath the canopy.
Introduction to Nature Writing at Cabilla
Nestled within the ancient temperate rainforest of Cabilla, the home of Our Oaken Bones, this three-night retreat invites you to immerse yourself in nature, creativity and the art of attentive observation.
Inspired by the landscape that shaped Merlin Hanbury-Tenison's bestselling memoir and the remarkable restoration of this unique corner of Cornwall, we will explore how paying close attention to the natural world can deepen both our writing and our connection to place.
